Shopify SEO
Short answer: Shopify sets up the technical basics. What's left to you is content and addresses: titles, descriptions, alt text and redirects.

What Shopify does, and what you do
Part of it comes ready in every store. The rest is up to you.
Shopify does it for you
- Sitemapyourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. It updates itself as you add products, main product images, pages, collections and blog posts.
- robots.txtA default file that suits SEO. You can edit it, but Shopify warns that a wrong edit can lose you all your traffic.
- Canonical tagsAdded automatically, so a product that appears at more than one address isn't counted as duplicate content.
- SSL and product schemaSSL is on by default. Themes add structured data to products, so price and stock can show on Google.
Left to you
- Titles and descriptionsThe theme generates a title with your store name. You write the search title and description for every product, collection and page.
- Image alt textA readable sentence that says what's in the image and includes the page's keywords.
- RedirectsFrom an old address to the new one. Up to 100,000 per store, and up to 20 million on Plus.

Keeping your rankings when you migrate
If you're coming from another platform, what happens to your old addresses matters most for SEO.
Addresses change
On your old site
/product/…/policies/…Shopify
/products/…/collections/…/pages/…An old address ends up somewhere else in the new store. The product, collection and page prefixes are fixed.
- List and map your old addresses
The old addresses are listed and matched with the new ones.
- Upload redirects before launch
In bulk, by CSV. They only work on broken addresses: if an old address still opens a page, the redirect doesn't kick in.
- Monitor after launch
Catch addresses that error in Search Console and redirect them.

Things you might be wondering
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. A sitemap, robots.txt, canonical tags, SSL and structured data for products come ready in every store. What really decides your rankings is the content, meaning titles, descriptions and page text, and that's in your hands.
How do I do SEO on Shopify?
Remove your store's password, submit your sitemap to Google Search Console, write the search title and description for every product, collection and page, add alt text to images, and create a redirect whenever you change an address. The checklist above has it in order.
Where is the Shopify sitemap?
At the root of your domain: yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Shopify creates the file itself and updates it as you add new products, pages or posts.
Can I change the URL structure on Shopify?
Partly. You can change the handle of a product, collection or page, but prefixes such as /products/, /collections/ and /pages/ are fixed. That's why old addresses need redirecting when you come from another platform.
When will my Shopify site show up on Google?
According to Shopify, a few days to a few weeks for a new site. Changes to an existing site usually show within 48–72 hours. A site:yourdomain.com search shows which pages are indexed.
Should I edit robots.txt?
Most stores don't need to. The default file suits SEO, and Shopify warns that a wrong edit can lose you all your traffic; it doesn't support those edits either.
